PyraVid is an interactive, non-traditional display that functions as a portal through which viewers can see a reflection of themselves in abstracted, digitized form.

project concept

PyraVid is an experimental art piece that explores the reflection of light contained within a metallic, pyramidal structure. Our custom-made reflective pyramid is positioned on top of an LED display panel, which will produce an array of digitized forms and light, creating an intriguing spectacle. While being a beautiful art piece that can be admired from afar, PyraVid will also have some interactive elements that will draw our audience closer to explore it more deeply. The content displayed by the tile is created entirely by the presence of viewers within its proximity.

how it works

We have positioned a Kinect directly above the structure, which is connected to video performance software, VDMX5, which then relays the video to the LED panel. The Kinect will capture the motions of anyone who approaches PyraVid, and will produce a digitized reflection of them on the LED panel, which will then be reflected from various angles within our pyramidal form resting above it, creating a mesmerizing infinite mirror effect. Sound will also play a significant role in the multifaceted experience of PyraVid. The content displayed by the LED panel will be audio responsive, and will react to sound made by the observers as they approach our interactive piece. The amplitude of the audio will control the exaggeration of the depth information that is received through the Kinect. This adds a third dimension to the 2D content that is displayed by the LED tile before it is scattered about the interior of the pyramid, further abstracting it.
